Making the transition from joinery and floor laying to retail, Paul Woodrup bought East Yorkshire Carpet, Beds & Wood Floors Ltd a little over ten years ago and hasn’t looked back since. Drawing on his years in the flooring industry, we sat down with Paul to learn more about his business venture and his relationship with Karndean Designflooring.
Q. How long have you been in the flooring business and what made you go into retail?
Well, I bought the company just over ten years ago, but I came from a joinery and wood floor laying background so all in all I’ve been in the industry 15 years.
Seeking a new challenge and taking a slightly different route in my career, I took the business on and I can honestly say that going into retail has opened my eyes when it comes to flooring. It’s incredible what you can achieve, easily transforming your floors into unique interior assets.

Q. What would you say most of your customers are looking for when they come in to choose a new floor?
Usually, people who come to us are in the middle of planning the refurbishment of a certain room or space in their home, and are looking for a floor that supports and offers a “wow factor”. It’s quite often we hear people who’ve had Karndean fitted say that it becomes a huge talking point of the room. I honestly can’t think of any other floor covering that has that affect.
Q. How many different flooring brands are you currently displaying?
In total, we display six different LVT suppliers, but our biggest commitment is to Karndean – quite simply because the choice available is second to none. As a company we’ve just reinvested in the latest stands for our showroom, which really does showcase to customers how special the Karndean collection is.
Q. So why did you choose to partner with Karndean?
Honestly, it really was a no brainer for us. Almost 90% of customers who come to us looking for LVT options always ask for Karndean. Personally, I think it’s as synonymous as Hoover is to vacuum cleaner! The choice of styles, quality of product and overall benefits of being able to design a floor exactly how you want it makes it such a good choice.
Q. How would you say our flooring meets the needs of the customers walking into your showroom?
Because of the huge choice of wood and stone look designs, plus with the quality of the product, there really is something for everyone. And to me that’s one of the most impressive aspects to Karndean. Whatever your budget, whether you want to go for the fantastic Knight Tile range or opt for the luxury of Art Select, there’s a floor to suit.
Q. What is your favourite Karndean product or range?
I’d have to say my favourite range is the Art Select collection. The meticulous handcrafted designs are so realistic it’s difficult to tell the flooring apart from the real the thing.
