It is always ideal to hire a professional when installing carpets in your home, but for homeowners who are on a limited budget, they may have to lay the carpets by themselves. When the carpets are laid, you will need to pay extra attention to avoid creating carpet seams when two carpets converge together. The obvious carpet seams can be an eyesore and may decrease the overall attractiveness of your space. Fortunately, there are several ways to solve this issue and they include:
Applying seam adhesives
Seam adhesives that are specially designed for use on carpets are viable methods to make the seams less visible. Simply begin by drawing a chalk line down to the center of the floor. It should be the point where both pieces of carpet meet. Next, apply double-sided tape down to the center of that line. While you apply the tape, you should firmly press either side of the carpet down to avoid lowering the other side too soon.
When you are ready to proceed again, apply some of the seam adhesive to the side of the carpet piece you have already lowered and then carefully lower the other side into the adhesive. When the previous step is performed correctly, you can then pass over the seam with a rolling pin. This will help secure all the work you have done so far and allow it to dry properly.
Utilizing a carpet seam iron
As seam iron is a handy tool when you want to achieve an inconspicuous carpet seam. To perform this method, simply follow the same steps as you did when you applied the seam adhesives. You may have previously used a rolling pin to secure your carpet in place, but this time round, press the seam iron along the seam into a piece of heat-activated tape.
Perfect the alignment
One of the most effective ways to avoid creating an obvious carpet seam is to ensure that the alignment between the two carpets is flawless from the start. Achieving a proper alignment is not impossible and you can start by overlapping the two pieces of carpet by a few inches. Next, use a chalk to mark a trim line on the top carpet. Note that this trim line should be marked with a half inch of overlap.
Take a carpet knife and cut the unwanted portions off the top piece. Be sure that the knife does not cut through to the bottom one. When you are done, you can proceed to check on the seams by laying both carpets flat on the floor. You may still need to use our carpet knife at this point to continuing trimming until you achieve a seamless fit. If you are handling patterned carpets, you will need even more precision, planning and care.
Carpets, when installed correctly, can even complement the existing flooring options you have chosen for your homes. Do remember to check for issues such as carpet seams to ensure that your carpets are laid perfectly for maximum effect.
