If you’re designing for a new space or simply in need of a fresh new look, remember it’s not just about your wall finishes or your furniture – your flooring choice is key to achieving a fresh look and feel in an office space. To get you thinking about your flooring options, our commercial design team have imparted some of their top tips below to get you out of that straight-lay rut.

Here are five ways that Designflooring can enhance any corporate setup….

Get casually productive
In this digital era, we’re no longer tied to our desks, consequently we’re seeing the movement towards creating informal meeting spaces and a desire to create lounge spaces within commercial environments is ever-growing. We have the ability to be mobile and flexible, and with this, employees are seeking more flexibility in the working areas within their offices.

The Energy Conservation Centre showcases this style with their spacious work area and abundant lighting. Cushy, plum-colored chairs add comfort and a pop of color to round out the look. The wide, rustic characteristics of our Karndean LooseLay Country Oak planks are a perfect pairing for a productive office with an informal vibe.

Create zones and guiding layouts
Flooring can be a fantastic tool for guiding employees and guests through an open-plan work space. Directing foot traffic, directional layouts can create visual zoning for multiuse spaces and they offer a unique and attractive look for the environment.

With cool gray tones and soft curved lines, the entrance and hallways of Viridian Glass create a subdued and relaxed environment. The floor also provides a clear eye path and helps to direct foot traffic through the space comfortably and efficiently.

Make a statement
With the flexibility to designate or separate a space, flooring can also denote the type of activity within the room. Rustic, weathered looks give the feel of a casual environment, while metallic and abstract designs evoke an industrial setting.

With their business focused on petroleum-related manufacturing and distribution, Oil Service, Inc., relied upon a distinct flooring design to set their executive conference room apart from their facility’s industrial setting. The company looked to the rich red hues inherent to cherry – a bold choice that evokes confidence in a meeting space where important discussions are held . Natural hardwood may not provide the durability required for such a busy conference space, but LVT provides a durable, appealing solution. Easy to install, the tramline border adds a touch of distinction to the formal space.

Be creative
It’s important to consider ways to highlight unique features in your space, such as this feature staircase (pictured below). Using creative flooring design, subtle changes in pattern and shape can make a significant impact. Here, inlaying a circle using our Opus Nero tiles to match the curvature of the staircase provides both definition and design cohesion with the rest of the space.

Repurpose and Modernize
“Re-urbanization” – a green effort to repurpose once-abandoned manufacturing spaces for office communities- is an increasingly popular practice. Such spaces frequently feature exposed elements such as steel beams and brick walls, an industrial style that you can reinforce by using an oxidized, metallic look floor, as seen below with our large scale Opus Aurego tiles.
