TREND ALERT: Incorporating raw and reclaimed design

Aligned with our fundamental design principle, ‘inspired by nature’, the trend for blending natural and reclaimed materials with organic, simplistic design is fast becoming a key interior look.

The charm of this style is its unique delivery of warmth, which is lovingly supplied by the idiosyncrasies of naturally aged textiles and materials. The diverse hues and ingrained, characterful patterns bring depth to any space, large or small.

The raw, organic element is really what underpins this style – moving on from stand-out, one-off reclaimed items to beautiful exposed brickwork and rustic flooring. We’ve seen a shift from ‘gimmick’ to considered, timeless design. The wide, deeply scorched visuals of our Salvaged Redwood planks* complement the bare brick and painted iron window frames of the loft apartment pictured above.

Try to keep certain aspects minimal and clean-lined – particularly the fundamental elements such as furniture, window drapes, lighting and wall coverings. The aged and reclaimed charm is full of mesmerising character, therefore be mindful of the layout of an area, as you don’t want a room to look too busy or overcrowded. Bare white walls are always great at supporting this principle.

Pulling colours from natural elements – you’ll find mixing various tones easy as they inevitably complement one another. As seen above, the charcoal black painted brickwork and copper tone shutters work with one another to bring depth and warmth to this space. Try to keep colour continuity by sticking to the same hues throughout your furniture and accessories.

Mix the rough with the smooth – add character to your room by incorporating a mixture of organic materials. The beauty of combing natural textural finishes is that it brings elegant complexity to a space. Don’t be afraid here, there are no rules – mix brushed metallic accessories with weathered woods, rustic stone, or polished concrete to create a surprisingly restful and peaceful living area.
