Communal event calendar – Yep, we’re going there. Whether it’s a Shared Google Calendar or the more traditional sort found hanging in the kitchen, get the family to enter all the various upcoming festive events – school fetes, Nativity plays, Christmas carols, dinner parties, work Christmas parties, family visits… genuinely, we could continue!  This way you’ll be able to easily keep track of what’s coming up.

Greeting cards – With friends and family far and wide, make sure you don’t miss the last delivery. Make a list of those who’ll need priority sending, those who require local delivery and those you can save the postage charge on by hand delivering. And when the flurry of cards come through your post box, display the goodwill gestures in a cheerful way. Card garlands make brilliant additions to your Christmas decorating scheme, but how about creating something a little more eye-catching using a handful of sturdy twigs and ribbon, as demonstrated below.

Advent calendars also make a lovely room accessories, so if you’re thinking about making your own, incorporate the colours of your decorations.

Room readiness – If you are planning to host a couple of soirees or family events throughout December, think about the function and layout of your rooms. You may find changing rooms over will help accommodate more people. It could be as simple as moving out a side table or cupboard to create more standing space.

Get decorative with fruit and nuts –Dried or fresh fruit make wonderful displays, as well as producing alluring scents. Arrange fresh fruit and seasonal nuts in a large bowl to bring the splendour of nature to a table. Alternatively, tie an array of dried oranges, apples, lemons and limes, adding cinnamon sticks to hessian string to make a sweet garland.

Stock up on the essentials – Think creamy white church candles, spiced fruit, pine cones, smoked glass candle holders, glitter, plaid ties, mistletoe and holly. You’ll be surprised how far these items will go to making any room look wonderfully festive.
