How To Choose Kid-Friendly Floors

Special attention should be paid to the type of flooring that is installed when children are present. The reason for this is because children, especially those that are very young, will spend a considerable amount of time sitting and playing on the floor. No single flooring option is ever perfect, and each will have its advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, parents must choose their flooring options carefully.

Cork Flooring

Cork is a wonderful flooring material for kids, especially in their rooms. The reason for this is because it is softer than many flooring types and is also warmer, which is helpful during the winter months. Children will be safer while playing on cork flooring but the downside to this option is that cork is highly vulnerable to moisture, which is why it usually isn’t found in bathrooms.

Carpet

Carpet is arguably the most forgiving flooring option for children. This is due to the simple fact that young children have a tendency to fall, and when this happens on a hard surface like wood, the child may sustain bruises. Carpet is comfortable to walk on and it is soft, and new brands are being introduced which are stain resistant and easy to clean. The biggest downside to carpet flooring is its high maintenance. Parents who fail to regularly clean their carpets run the risk of creating indoor air pollution, which can be unhealthy for both themselves and their children.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate is the preferred choice for parents who are looking for a cost effective solution that is simple to install and safe for their children. The core advantage of this type of flooring is that it is tough, resistant to scratching and works well on the surface of a playroom. The downside to laminate however is that it is harder than carpet.

Bamboo

Bamboo offers many of the advantages of hardwood with few of the downsides. For example, it is extremely tough and durable, but is also cheaper than hardwood. While hardwood is vulnerable to scratching, bamboo is resistant to it. Bamboo flooring is also an excellent alternative for parents who are environmentally aware. However, as with hardwood, a child can hurt themselves when falling on it, so an area rug should be added.

Hardwood Flooring

While hardwood is not as soft as carpet, it is more forgiving than natural stone. Although it’s not the best option for children because it is vulnerable to scratching when children run their toys across it, no one can deny the aesthetic appeal of the hardwood floors. In such cases, the best solution to this dilemma is the area rug.

A large area rug can serve multiple purposes; it can enhance the design of a room, and it can also be used as a designated location where children can play with their toys without damaging the hardwood floor that surrounds it. Parents might want to keep their children confined to this space, so a play pen is highly recommended. Area rugs also come in a variety of different styles, so parents have many options to choose from.
