Home Renovation Blog: We Get our Hands Dirty and Start Painting the Kitchen

As the blackberries ripen on the thorns and the cooler evening breeze blows in, autumn is definitely on its way, and, its arrival heralds the next phase of our build. Now the house is watertight, the plastering has started in earnest.

There is a whole lot of square meterage to plasterboard, plaster and skim but the team from Sequoia Group are making good progress. I absolutely love plaster – silky smooth surfaces, right-angles and a pink-blush glow transform rooms from building site to recognisable living space.

We got our ‘hands dirty’ for the first time this weekend – due to a scheduling issue the kitchen’s first coat of paint, the mist coat, had to be done ASAP, so Sean, me and the kids rolled up our sleeves and got painting.

We’ve lined up a decorator to start in three weeks time – we just need the plaster to dry in time. It’s been a joy choosing paint colours – it feels like a milestone moment.

Georgia Betts painting the kitchen

We got hands on last week to paint the kitchen. Yes that is a carrier bag on my head!

We’re painting most of the house in an off-white (Little Greene’s Slaked Lime), excluding the master bedroom which will be grey (Farrow & Ball’s Elephant’s Breath) and the living room which will be a dusky pink (Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster – yes, the irony of painting a room with three coats of paint to get it to look exactly like the raw plaster finish it started with is not lost on us!).

We got a lovely message from our daughter

Then we’ll be on to the final push – fitting lights, wooden floors, getting the sinks plumbed in, attaching the exterior wooden cladding, ordering carpet – more balls in the air, but I’m looking forward to that juggling act.
